Firn Snow, Sunshine, and Optimal Slope Conditions
Your Guide to the Perfect Spring Ski Day in St. Anton am Arlberg
These recommendations will help you make the most of a ski day in March or April in St. Anton am Arlberg. During these months, it is even more worthwhile to rise early and start skiing in the morning when the snow is still firm and grippy.
The perfect way to ease into a spring ski day is the descent from Gampen to the valley. The Fang slope offers the ideal start – a harmonious run that is particularly captivating in the gentle morning light and is among the first to develop "Firn snow." This means a soft layer of snow forms on the hard base, providing skiers with exceptional enjoyment.
Freshly warmed up from the valley descent, head up to Kapall. At 2,330 meters, a spectacular view of the snow-covered peaks unfolds, while the red run down to the Schöngraben lift offers a delightful experience. Here, ski enthusiasts can carve their rhythmic turns on wide slopes, which are ideal to ski thanks to the cool morning temperatures.
A true classic awaits at Galzig – the legendary Kandahar slope. With its varied sections, it challenges sporty skiers while the panoramas provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable descent. Galzig is also a central starting point for more fantastic runs and invites you to fully enjoy the high-alpine descents
But the highest peak of the ski day – and of the entire ski area – still lies ahead. The Vallugabahn cable car takes adventure-seekers, accompanied by a ski guide, up to Valluga at an impressive 2,809 meters. From here, breathtaking high-mountain landscapes and challenging slopes reveal their full glory in the morning light. For those without a ski guide, the “White Thrill” racecourse, starting at the Vallugabahn 1 mountain station, is highly recommended.
When the slopes in the northern part of the ski area begin to soften, it’s time to switch to the valley’s sunny south side: Rendl. For many, this part of the ski area is a true insider tip – especially in spring. Due to its unique location, the snow here stays compact longer, and around midday, the legendary corn snow forms – this unique blend of firm snow with a thin, soft top layer that feels like carving turns through butter. On the wide, open slopes here, you’ll experience the pure freedom of skiing.
A leisurely break is, of course, part of the experience. In spring, it’s worth planning your lunch break a bit later to enjoy the optimal slope conditions into the early afternoon and then relax on sun-drenched terraces. Rendl, with its Rendl Beach – a large sun terrace with breathtaking mountain views – invites you to unwind wonderfully with a cool drink and lively music in a deck chair. As you soak up the sun and admire the surrounding peaks, you’ll build anticipation for the final run of the day.
