The Gand Mine
On the hunt for ore
‘Glück auf!’ is the motto of the Gand mine, where history comes alive and long buried secrets are revealed. You’ll embark on a historical journey into another world and another time, and learn about the life of the miners and everyday life in an ore mine. In the Gand Mine, with its centuries-old history, you’ll find interesting information about geology, the search for ore, the mining and separation of the ore and its further processing. The circular hiking trail to the mine leads to an exciting adventure for the whole family.
You’ll find the mine in the district of Gand, above St. Jakob am Arlberg. According to recent findings, ore was already being mined here in the 15th and 16th centuries. Discovered by an amateur hobby archaeologist, the old galleries have been recreated to the true originals, and allow visitors to take a journey through time. The Knåppa hole and the Markus gallery, once the miners' workplace, are now open again, as are the three mining buildings, where you can experience history at first hand and learn more about the hard and dangerous work that was done here.
