Musica et Artificium – 27 - 30 June 2013

Musica et Artificium

St. Anton am Arlberg: Folk music meets ancient handicrafts and regional products.

They are becoming more seldom, but every so often you will hear stories of bygone days, when there was still a cobbler, blacksmith and wood turner in the village. Those who appreciate ancient handicraft, folk music and village markets should put the last week in June in St. Anton am Arlberg in the diary: As part of the „Arlberg Day of Folk Music“ on the 29th June, the St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Board is hosting the very first „Musica et Artificium“ from 27th to 30th June, where the clocks will be turned back for a couple of days and ancient traditions from yesteryear will be revive.

A deep sense of national identity and an easy going nature are integral components of the Tyrolean mentality – and they can be felt especially during the quieter, more contemplative summer months. What could be nicer or more original than listening to traditional folk music, sampling local products or inspecting ancient handicrafts in the midst of lush green meadows and the Tyrolean mountains? „Musica et Artificium“ is an event for the whole family. Spend time together, try things out and especially enjoy, is the motto of this multi day event.

Workshops and Courses (only in German)

„Felting and milling“, „dirndl tailoring“, „wood sculpture“, „cooking to old recipes“, „papermaking“, „ceramic design“, „folk music instrument accompaniment“ – while mothers and daughters are sewing a traditional costume, fathers and sons can practise woodcarving and grandma can try out an ancient recipe. Craftsmen and musicians are offering an array of workshops and courses on the subjects of “Folk Music”, “Ancient Handicrafts” and “Regional Products” from the 27th to 29th June in the centre of St. Anton am Arlberg.

Day of Folk Music, Handicrafts and Fresh Produce Market

For the 11th time now, the entire pedestrian zone at St. Anton am Arlberg will be devoted to alpine melodies. Ensembles from Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Styria, Carinthia, South Tyrol and Switzerland will perform music that has been cherished and passed down alpine generations. Around 20 groups can be heard all over the village from 11 to 18 hrs.

Accompanied by these traditional sounds, craftsmen and women from Bavaria, North and South Tyrol will be displaying their professions from bygone days. Woodcarvers, edelweiss and spoon carvers, basket weavers, felt makers, schnapps makers and ointment fabricators will be working, chiselling, carving and weaving in the pedestrian zone. We will also be taking a trip down memory lane with regards to food. Based on the “cooking courses and sampling” principle, various market stalls will be offering the strange sounding but delicious tasting” Kiachla, Kaskiachla, Vintschgerla, Krapfen, Strauba and Prügeltorte” specialities on Saturday. This delicious culinary journey is complemented by regional products such as, cheese, bacon, sheep and goat’s milk, herbs, jams and dried fruits.

Children’s Programme

Those visiting with children have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Activity Programme free of charge. Fun and entertainment for children of all ages can be enjoyed here (e.g. expeditions, low rope course, Waterworld, WunderWanderWeg (Wonder Walking Trail), crafts, games, etc.,) while parents participate in the workshops.
